How to Keep Pet Hair Under Control Without Losing Your Mind

You love your pet. You do not love finding hair in your coffee. The trick isn't cleaning harder — it's catching the hair before it lands.

Start at the source

Five minutes of brushing a day removes more hair than an hour of vacuuming. Brush outdoors or on a washable mat, and pick the right tool: a slicker brush for long coats, a rubber curry brush or deshedding tool for short-haired shedders.

During spring and autumn moult, double it. Those weeks are when most of the year's hair ends up in your home.

Protect the hotspots

  • The sofa. A washable throw over your pet's favourite spot beats deep-cleaning the upholstery every week.
  • The car. A back seat cover takes thirty seconds to fit and saves your interior from hair and scratches alike.
  • The bed. A dedicated pet blanket, washed weekly, keeps hair out of your own bedding.

Cleaning that actually gets it out

A rubber glove or squeegee dragged across the sofa pulls out hair a vacuum leaves behind — fabric grips it too tightly for suction alone. On carpet, do the same with a stiff rubber brush before you vacuum.

In the washing machine, run a fifteen-minute dry tumble first. The lint filter catches loose hair that would otherwise stick to everything.

Don't forget the air

Much of the "hair" in your home is dander floating around. A HEPA filter cuts down what settles on every surface — and it makes a real difference if anyone in the house has allergies.

One thing to check

Sudden heavy shedding outside the moulting season can signal stress, poor diet or a skin condition. If the hair loss is patchy or the skin looks irritated, it's worth a vet visit.
